The tropics are staying active this week, with one hurricane already out at sea and two tropical waves that could develop into named storms. Here’s the latest breakdown of what’s
happening across the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf:
Hurricane Gabrielle
The National Hurricane Center is currently tracking Hurricane Gabrielle, spinning in the central subtropical Atlantic. The good news is that Gabrielle is far from land, and at this point it’s not a threat to the U.S. or the Caribbean. Still, it’s creating rough seas and large swells across parts of the open Atlantic that could eventually reach some coastlines.
Wave #1 – AL93 (Central & Western Atlantic)
About 900 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, a tropical wave (called Invest 93L) is showing more signs of getting its act together. Conditions look favorable for it to strengthen, and the NHC says there’s a 60% chance of development in the next 2 days and a 90% chance within the week.If it becomes a depression or storm, it would likely move west-northwest toward the western tropical Atlantic. This one definitely has high potential, so we’ll be watching it closely.
Wave #2 – AL94 (East of the Leeward Islands)
Another wave, Invest 94L, is already bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to the Windward and Leeward Islands. Tonight and Wednesday, it will spread into Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. By late this week, it should slow down and curve northwest near the Bahamas — and that’s when it could start organizing into a depression. The NHC gives it a 20% chance of forming in the next 2 days, but that number jumps to 60% within the next week. Residents in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamas should keep a close eye on this system.
What to Watch For
Gabrielle: Staying out to sea, but sending swells.
AL93: The stronger candidate for tropical development this week.
AL94: Already bringing rough weather to the islands, with a shot at organizing near the Bahamas.
📌 Bottom line: We’re heading deeper into peak hurricane season, and the Atlantic is starting to wake up. While Gabrielle isn’t a land concern, both AL93 and AL94 could become tropical depressions — or even named storms — before the week is out.
