Dangerous winter storm to impact much of the country

A powerful winter storm is unfolding this weekend and is forecast to affect a broad swath of the United States through Monday. This storm will tap deep Gulf and Pacific moisture as it interacts with an Arctic air mass, producing heavy snow, freezing rain, sleet, and dangerously cold temperatures from the Southern Plains into the Northeast.

Across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley, wintry precipitation is already developing Friday, with rain quickly changing to freezing rain and sleet as temperatures fall below freezing. Ice accumulations — particularly from northern Louisiana through Mississippi and Alabama — have the potential to exceed damaging thresholds, raising the risk of power outages and widespread tree damage.

Farther north and east, snowfall will become the dominant threat. Forecast models show 6–12+ inches or more of snow possible from portions of the Plains into the Ohio Valley and Appalachian regions through Sunday, with some local totals exceeding a foot in spots. This heavy snow will combine with Arctic air and brisk winds, producing hazardous travel conditions and dangerously low wind chills through the weekend and into Monday.

In the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, snow, sleet, and ice will spread in through Saturday and continue into Sunday and early Monday, with significant travel disruptions expected around major cities. Forecast discussions emphasize that even where snowfall totals vary, the combination of ice, snow, and deep cold will make travel treacherous and infrastructure stress significant.

Travel & Power Impacts: Airlines and rail systems are already reporting thousands of flight cancellations and delays, and numerous states have issued emergency declarations ahead of the storm. Road travel is expected to become difficult to impossible at times this weekend, and utility providers are preparing for potential extended outages.
