Catch the Celestial Show: This Week's "Blood Moon" Lunar Eclipse!

Get ready to look up! This week, skywatchers are in for a spectacular treat: a total lunar eclipse, turning the moon a captivating reddish hue, often called a "blood moon."

A "Blood Moon" during a lunar eclipse

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting our planet's shadow onto the lunar surface. This week's event is a total lunar eclipse, meaning the entire Moon will enter the Earth's umbra, the darkest part of the shadow.

The eclipse will take place on the night of March 13th and into the early morning of March 14th, 2025. North and South America will have prime viewing opportunities. Here's a general idea of the timing, but always check local resources for precise details:

  • Penumbral phase begins: This is when the Moon enters the Earth's outer shadow, causing a subtle dimming.

  • Partial eclipse begins: The Moon starts entering the Earth's umbra, and a visible "bite" appears.

  • Totality: The entire Moon is within the umbra, displaying the "blood moon" effect. This will occur around 2:26 a.m. Eastern Time.

  • The eclipse will then proceed in reverse, with the Moon exiting the umbra and penumbra.

Remember that these times vary depending on your time zone. So, find a spot with a clear view of the sky, and prepare to be mesmerized by this celestial dance. Don't miss this chance to witness the Earth's shadow painting the Moon!
